Gundam Display 01 is a modular typeface inspired by the Japanese Mecha franchise, Gundam, resulting in an abstract and code-like typeface. This experiment explores how the appearance of typographic forms changes our engagement with written communication. Its hard-to-read nature transforms our unconscious reading habit into an intentional and enforced effort.
The character set is constructed from 21 bespoke modules on a systematic grid. The three images below showcase the 21 modules at different scales, and the final character set from A-Z.
Practical and stylistic experimentation of the thickness of incisions
Additionally, each module was lasercut on MDF for letterpress printing purposes. The image on the left shows the lasercut file set-up.
