EXCERPT TAKEN FROM VIMEO DESCRIPTION OF GOOD NIGHT BY ASAKO UJITA
In collaboration with LUX, a London-based moving arts organization, I was challenged to design an exhibition poster for artist and filmmaker Asako Ujita’s upcoming film, Good Night. Good Night is a conceptual film exploring family lineage through carefully shot footage of Taiwanese landscape and weaving narratives
In line with Ujita’s repertoire of work, the film unfolds in a dreamlike, meditative trance, where non-linear stories, shifting atmospheres, and nuanced silences engage viewers in a quest for the past.
The poster design needed to embody the film’s lingering emotions of grief, calm and proximity while capturing the poignant role of nature in these familial histories. The final design focuses on contrasting emotion-led, lyrical typographic forms for the show title with an abstract, natural background taken directly from the film.
Working directly with Asako Ujita, I began the process by focusing on typography. I shared several options and concepts, developed through both free-hand and gridded processes. As we narrowed down the direction, the typographic language was developed further till we landed on something that felt striking and poetic, while retaining legibility and clarity.
The final poster uses a minimalist composition to draw attention to the show title and artist name. The supporting information adopts a more restrained and structured approach to leave space for the lettering’s emotional impact.
